Three faculty members are publishing an article this month that surveys methods for researching the practical applications of spirituality for the individual, organization, and society.

The article will appear in a special issue of the Journal of Organizational Change Management. The authors of the article are Dennis Heaton and Jane Schmidt-Wilk, both of the management department, and Frederick Travis, director of the University's EEG, Consciousness and Cognition Lab.

The authors point out in the article that researching spirituality in organizations can be understood in terms of two complementary approaches: subjective and objective. Subjective methods involve conducting self-referral research in one's own consciousness while one personally participates as an instrument for transformational change in organizations. Objective methods consist of conducting research in which 'spirituality in organizations' is the object of quantitative or qualitative research.

The authors review measures that have been used in previous studies of the Transcendental Meditation program, including studies in organizational settings. These findings are organized in the article in terms of the five indications of spiritual development or wholeness of life identified by Maharishi: health, happiness, wisdom, success, and fulfillment.

The article, titled 'Constructs, Methods, and Measures for Researching Spirituality in Organizations,' says that clarifying constructs, methods, and measures for systematic research can advance knowledge about spirituality in organizations.

In the conclusion to the paper the authors suggest that managers, job seekers, and investors evaluate an organization's holistic performance in terms of health, happiness, wisdom, success, and fulfillment.
