10 June 2008
MONTEVIDEO, June 10 (Reuters) - Uruguay's economy grew 10.9 percent in the first quarter compared with the same period of 2007, the government said on Tuesday.
It also grew 2.4 percent in the first three months of the year when compared with the last quarter of 2007, the central bank said in a statement.
The year-on-year figure was boosted by external demand for Uruguay's agro-industrial goods and domestic demand for certain services, such as communications.
The transportation and communications sector expanded nearly 27 percent from the first quarter of last year, while manufacturing activity grew 13.4 percent.
The government forecasts economic growth of 5.25 percent this year, while analysts surveyed by the central bank estimate growth of 6.11 percent.
Uruguay's economy grew 7.4 percent in 2007, marking its fifth straight year of expansion after deep crisis.
