A Management PhD student at Maharishi University of Management finished her research relating reduced anxiety to the practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM). According to Dr Dennis Heaton, co-director of the programme, the research is first rate.
Sabita Sawhney's dissertation is titled 'The Effect of the TM Technique on Anxiety, Emotional Awareness, and Trust: Implications for Supply Chain Management'.
Dr Heaton shared an excerpt from Ms Sawhney's abstract:
'Increased attention is being paid to supply chain partnerships in which trust has been recognized as a key influencing factor. Empirical studies have established that the partnerships based on trust avoid opportunism, reduce purchasing cost, and improve profitability. Despite the important role played by trust in improving the bottom line for organizations, there is very little work done on how to create trust between supply chain partners.'
Dr Heaton added, explaining the link between trust and the practice of Transcendental Meditation, 'The practical implication of the research [Ms Sawhney] has completed is that the practice of the TM technique is associated with increased disposition to trust; and the practical implication of that is that it can be useful to businesses to gain these benefits of increasing trust and profitability.'
Using a table from Ms Sawhney's research, Dr Heaton elaborated on the link between Transcendental Meditation and those benefits. The table showed the effect of the TM technique on trait anxiety and trait emotional intelligence, and on the disposition to trust, highlighting the association of those variables.
Ms Sawhney found a high correlation between regular practice of Transcendental Meditation and a higher disposition to trust, lower trait anxiety, and increased trait emotional intelligence. The probability of these results occurring by chance was 1 in 10,000 or a P-value of 0.0001.
Because these findings have strong statistical significance, Dr Heaton expects Ms Sawhney's research to find appreciation and publication in the academic community.
