David Lynch digs depth and good coffee

Filmmaker David Lynch, one of the featured guests at the First Annual AFI Dallas International Film Festival, held 22 March to 1 April 2007, discussed with the Dallas Morning News movie critic the unique aspects of his film 'Inland Empire', and the contribution of Transcendental Meditation to the creative process.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Mr Lynch introduced his film on Saturday night, 24 March, with a quote from the Upanishads (an aspect of the Vedic Literature referring to the 'transcendental' and 'self-referral' qualities of consciousness): 'We are like the spider. We weave our life and then move along in it. We are like the dreamer who dreams and then lives in the dream. This is true for the entire universe.'
Mr Lynch later chatted with Dallas Morning News movie critic Chris Vognar about his innovative camera work with a digital video camera filming 'Inland Empire', saying, 'It's so good for the scenes, for the director and the actors to get deep, deep into it. A magic can happen. And you can stay in that scene and see exactly what you're getting.'
The subject moved easily to Lynch's new book, 'Catching the Big Fish,' which is about the connection between Transcendental Meditation and the creative process.
Dallas Morning News quoted Mr Lynch as saying, 'There is an unbounded, infinite, eternal ocean of consciousness within every human being.' With the practice of TM, the artist is able to access that 'ocean and fish for the big catch, or idea, and translate it into imagery'.
