The final stop included a look at Abundance Eco Village where they found 'several homes that were completely energy-independent using a combination of wind, photovoltaic, and solar thermal. The normal looking homes use one-tenth of the energy of an average home with a combination of insulation and energy efficient appliances, and rather than pumping valuable water to keep their lawns green, the homes are surrounded by edible plants.'

The article noted that beans fed nitrogen to corn stalks, and the squash grew in the shade below. Edible weeds were grown for salads, and water was collected by a rainwater catchment.

At Abundance Eco Village they also met students from the university who were learning about sustainable living through the 'hands on' Big Green Summer Program.
