On 8 August 2008 The Hawk Eye reported: Since the early 1990s, Iowa has been growing a 'vision for the future', starting with The Raj hotel and Ayurveda spa, and continuing with the fast-growing Maharishi Vedic City, a fully-blooming community of people who practise Transcendental Meditation and healthy living. It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring fulfilment to the field of culture.

Where once there was only the Iowa prairie, now stands The Raj, named one of the top five spas of the millennium, and surrounded by 'a lush lawn, gardens, and a pond', the Hawk Eye reported.

The success of The Raj, which hosts people from around the world, both in its spa and gourmet vegetarian restaurant, was soon followed by the construction of the Rukmapura Park hotel.

Next came a community of homes that soon became Maharishi Vedic City, the newest, fastest-growing, all-organic city in Iowa, which has Maharishi University of Management as its nearby neighbour.

The Hawk Eye reported, 'Maharishi Vedic City, also referred to as MVC, or Vedic City, uses the ancient language Sanskrit on all its signs. ''Vedic'' comes from the Sanskirt word ''Veda'', which means knowledge. ''Maharishi'' is in honor of . . . Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the famous spiritual leader of transcendental meditation who also is responsible for translating that message to the university and its followers.'

A tour of Maharishi Vedic City should start at The Raj where tour brochures are located in the lobby. Of note is the architecture used in the building of the businesses and homes.

The Hawk Eye reported, 'The buildings are distinctive and visual and promote the Maharishi Sthapatya Veda design, which requires an east-facing front.'

City architect Jonathan Lipman was quoted as saying, 'The sun's rays in the morning are the most nourishing. (The relation to the sun and nature provide) health, happiness and family harmony.'

A Peace Palace is currently under construction in the centre of town. Upon completion, the Peace Palace will offer programmes on Transcendental Meditation and knowledge of how to live happy, peaceful lives.

Also undergoing some renovation is the Maharishi Vedic Observatory.

The Hawk Eye noted, 'The observatory is undergoing some construction as part of an Iowa Great Places grant. The 10 large masonry instruments are based on the principles of the sun dial.'

'If the sun is out, the shadows cast on the instruments give you some sense of place in our galaxy,' Lipman told the Hawk Eye.

The article advised, 'When planning your trip, check out the city on the Web at www.maharishivediccity.net. Browse the information and signup for the city tour program. On the way there, or on the way home, don't just pass through Fairfield.'

The nearby city of Fairfield features the Stephen Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts, the Fairfield 1st Friday Art Walk (which was named an Iowa Tourism Event of the Year), and the Maharishi University of Management campus with its newly constructed $8 million Student Union and other buildings.
