Working as a global peacemaker: Traditional Leaders from the Amazon speak in MERU, Holland

Traditional Rulers from the Amazon recently visited MERU, Holland and spoke about how the knowledge and programmes of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi have transformed and supported their people. One leader has been known all his life as a global peace-maker, and is committed to sharing Maharishi's knowledge to create peace around the world.

Dr Christopher Crowell, Minister of Religion and Culture of the Global Country of World Peace, warmly welcomed the leaders, a father and son, who wore the colourful traditional dress of their tribe. Dr Crowell and thanked them for coming all the way from the Amazon. 'I offer very, very great appreciation to you and your father—and also great appreciation to your people, because you are the representatives of your people, and through you we are able to connect to the people of this generation and all of your ancestors and predecessors who really preserved your traditions down through the ages,' Dr Crowell said.

Speaking through a translator, the two leaders expressed their joy in the opportunity to be in MERU for a second time. 'There is no barrier between these two cultures,' one of the leaders said.

'We are from a humble and simple tribe that lives in nature, in the forest, and tries to preserve everything the forest has,' he continued.

The leader spoke of the sad history of his people. In 1911 the population was reduced to only five people. Now they are about 400—mostly young, except for three elders.

He also spoke about his efforts to preserve the language and culture of his people. 'One of the ways to strengthen this knowledge is . . . [through] the 12 tribes that speak the same language; it's a hope for us.'

'I'm very happy about what Maharishi has done,' the leader said, adding that he feels Maharishi lives in the hearts of everyone in MERU. Very naturally Maharishi's knowledge 'is going to spread all over the world', he said.

'I feel very pleased to be part of this,' he continued. 'I belong to Mother Nature, and when you belong to Mother Nature, there are no barriers, no countries—we are just one.'

He was born in a land permeated by the devastating effects of violence. 'But I didn't want to have revenge. I chose another way—that was peace . . . so that I could bring peace to other people, to everyone.

'I still feel this hurt in my heart, so I try not to think about that . . . because there is another way out. . . . I have to forget [the past] and try to live in a better way with people.'

'Since I was born, I wanted to [help create] global peace,' he said. From the time he was a child, people told him he was different and would be able to bring peace to people.

'I want to ask your support, so that we could together unite our strengths,' he said.

The leader concluded by expressing his deep gratitude. He thanked his father who 'taught me everything that I know today, and he made me this man that I am now—and [I thank him] for all he's done for me.

'We are very proud to be here, and that we have learned [the Transcendental Meditation Technique]. We are here with pure heart, and we want to thank you for giving us this technique.'

The leader expressed his wish to 'have more and more people all around doing this programme'.
