Maharishi Vastu homes around the world feature space-saving designs that help create a feeling of spaciousness.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi explained that the effect of Maharishi Vastu 'is to align individual intelligence with cosmic intelligence, individual life with cosmic life,' said Jon Lipman, AIA, US Director of Maharishi Vedic Architecture. Even a very small Vastu home supports this, he said.

Dr Lipman showed photos of such homes, including a log home in Finland, a mud-brick home in Belgium, a stone home in Ukraine, and a 25 square metre (approximately 230 square foot) home in South Africa.  

One young person in the US decided to build a very small straw-bale home about 12 square metres or 120 square feet—'perhaps the very smallest Maharishi Vastu home built to date,' Dr Lipman said. She had grown up in Vastu and although her finances were limited she wanted to build and live in her own Vastu home. With a cob base and sod roof the construction materials cost only a few hundred dollars. She and her friends constructed the home themselves.

Space saving features in these small homes can include very steep staircases leading up to lofts. A loft can add a whole new dimension to a small home, and steep staircases mean space is well utilized, Dr Lipman said.

He showed a small home in Abundance EcoVillage belonging to a couple on faculty at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, USA that he said feels quite spacious because of the loft.
