25 March 2012
In her recent television show dedicated to the Transcendental Meditation Programme and the town of Fairfield, Iowa, USA, Oprah Winfrey visited the two large meditation halls where many of the residents go each day to meditate together.
In the beginning of the segment, Ms Winfrey said, 'Rush hour in Fairfield, Iowa, is unlike any other town in America. Twice a day, residents stop what they're doing and head to these two giant golden domes to meditate.'
The Oprah Winfrey Network website summarized this part of the show:
'Oprah meets with the town's mayor and a founder of a nearby community to learn more about the practice of Transcendental Meditation, and then tours the Bagambhrini Golden Dome of Pure Knowledge for women.'
Outside the dome where women meditate together, Ms Winfrey met with Ed Malloy, the mayor of Fairfield, and Candace Badgett, one of the founders of nearby Maharishi Vedic City. Both have practised Transcendental Meditation for over forty years.
Ms Winfrey remarked that though the domes are for advanced meditators only, she and her television crew were granted special access inside.
She entered the large light-filled dome, dominated by pale whites and soft yellows. The dome was lined with foam and backjacks where anyone can sit and meditate. Some people come and meditate for hours at a time, Ms Winfrey reported.
Mayor Malloy said, 'The great thing about this room is that the only activity here is meditation, deep, long hours of meditation.'
'Under this dome you have Christians and Jews and Muslims and Hindus and Catholics?' Ms Winfrey asked.
Mayor Malloy responded, 'Yes, all denominations, absolutely.'
As she walked out of the meditation dome, Ms Winfrey noticed a framed quotation on the wall.
'This is the essence of what Transcendental Meditation is all about,' she said, then proceeded to read the quotation from the ancient Roman ruler Marcus Aurelius:
'Nowhere can a man withdraw to a more untroubled quietude than in his own soul. Grant yourself this withdrawal continually, and refresh yourself.'
