On a visit to Fairfield, Iowa, USA to film an episode of her new television show, 'Oprah's Next Chapter', Oprah Winfrey visited Paul and Carol Winer to talk about their decision to practise Transcendental Meditation and to move to the unique town.
The episode, titled 'America's Most Unusual Town', focused on the large meditating community in Fairfield, Iowa, highlighting various characteristics of the town that make it unique.
Ms Winfrey visited the Winer family and interviewed them to understand what it is about meditation and Fairfield that attracts so many people. On the show she introduced the Winers, saying they have been married for about 20 years, but just a few years ago decided to move from an affluent Atlanta suburb to Fairfield.
'They say they were very happy, but after making the move to Iowa, their children have blossomed and their marriage is stronger than ever.'
Ms Winfrey asked the couple if their long-term meditation practice prevented them from ever feeling stress.
Carol Winer responded, 'You can get stressed. I still get stressed. But I know that if I take a few minutes and get quiet, then it goes away and I seem to get perspective again.'
She added that practising Transcendental Meditation has helped her marriage as well. 'We've been through so much together that I don't know how we would have survived as well as we did as a couple had we not been meditating.'
'Have you seen a difference in your children?' Ms Winfrey asked.
'Yes,' Ms Winer responded, with a happy smile. 'That's the best part.'
She spoke of the changes she's seen in her son. 'Philip has always been a little hesitant in life. He has grown stronger and more confident. He was willing to audition for a play in front of about 75-80 middle school girls, so that to me is a clear indication of great confidence.'
