In an acclaimed series of public lectures in Greece earlier this year, Dr Ken Chandler, a distinguished scholar of both ancient Greek philosophy and Maharishi Vedic Science, continued to discuss main themes of his new book, Veda and Greece—that the knowledge the pre-Socratics, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle were offering was fundamental, eternal wisdom and that it was parallel to the teaching of the Veda and Vedic literature.

In addition to quoting beautiful passages from Plato, Dr Chandler, an adjunct professor of philosophy at Maharishi University of Management,* also quoted Aristotle on the subject of consciousness. In his Metaphysics, Aristotle described consciousness as 'that which is conscious of itself. Its consciousness is a consciousness of consciousness,'

Dr Bevan Morris, president of Maharishi University of Management, who was in Greece at the time of Dr Chandler's tour and participated in one of his presentations, again commented on the striking similarities between these expressions and those used by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in his Vedic Science to describe the fundamental level of pure consciousness in human experience.

Aristotle also says, 'Divine consciousness and its object are not distinct, but identical; and the consciousness is one with what it is conscious of. Perfect consciousness is consciousness of its object in such a way that the consciousness and its object become one, and consciousness thus becomes its own object. It is pure, conscious of itself, and continuous.'

Veda and Greece: Foundations of Knowledge in the Experience of Higher States of Consciousness is the first of three volumes written by Dr Chandler that will be released by Maharishi University of Management Press. Publication is also keenly anticipated of Volume 2, The Unity of Religion, which gives experiences of pure consciousness in the ancient Middle East, including early Christianity and other religions; and Volume 3, The Experience of Pure Consciousness from the Renaissance to the Present, Dr Morris said.

'We are very fortunate that we have a scholar of this greatness, in Dr Chandler,' Dr Morris said, also noting that Maharishi appreciated and encouraged Dr Chandler's research and bringing out this knowledge in his books. This is an area of knowledge, Dr Morris commented, that would be very valuable for students to study in the curriculum of Maharishi University of Management, along with a book in preparation by MUM executive vice president Dr Craig Pearson on experiences of higher states of consciousness throughout the ages.

'They're a subject that would be fascinating to a whole generation of young people, to see this global unity of experience.'

Volume 1 of Dr Chandler's book will be available soon from Maharishi University of Management Press.

* Dr Chandler was also founding editor of the journal Modern Science and Vedic Science.
