On his 16-country tour, acclaimed film director David Lynch spoke about the importance of Transcendental Meditation in his life, both personally and professionally. He also spoke about his creative process and what it means to be an artist.
A film student in Dublin, Ireland, asked him, 'Do you think everyone here is an artist?'
Mr Lynch answered in the affirmative. 'Everyone is an artist in their own way.'
Even those who do not appear to have artistic professions, or who do not appear to have art in their lives, Mr Lynch considers artists.
He gave the example of someone cleaning in very unpleasant circumstances—'that could be a horrible job, drudgery, a nightmare, but you start building up this inner happiness, creativity, intelligence [through meditation] and you're suddenly going to work in the worst conditions and you start seeing it differently,' Mr Lynch said.
'You start getting into cleaning and maybe you get your boss to get some disinfectants or maybe you invent a new brush or maybe you vacuum, and pretty soon you're kind of enthusiastic about it.'
With enthusiasm comes a sense of artistry and pride, Mr Lynch said.
The cleaning is accomplished faster and more effectively, the end result is 'more shiny and it's really going good. You're finding happiness in your work and your boss takes notice and comes to you and gives you a raise. Not only that, he invites you home to dinner. It goes like that.
'Everyone has creativity,' Mr Lynch said, but he added that through the process of transcending during the Transcendental Meditation technique, creativity naturally increases. 'You can just get more and more and more of it. Everyone knows about catching ideas; you can just catch more. And everyone knows about stress; everyone can see that stress lifting. Everyone knows of some kind of suffering; they can see that suffering start to go or become less and less.'
This meditation practice increases people's ability to express their innate artistry, said Mr Lynch.
