25 December 2012
At the Fourth Annual Vastu Panorama Conference in Bhopal, India, experts in the field of Vastu (Vedic) architecture gathered to discuss the latest developments in Vastu buildings, especially those designed for cities.
Dr Eike Hartmann, a specialist in Maharishi Vastu architecture, spoke in a video presentation about some of the unique characteristics of Vastu design. He emphasized the importance of proper orientation with regards to the cardinal directions and the rising sun, but said that the placement of rooms within a building is also important.
'The house should be designed in such a way that the different energies of the sun (as it moves from east to west in the course of a day) correspond to the specific functions and activities of each room. Then natural law is always supporting every aspect of our daily life.'
Certain sections of a house, given their placement with relation to the sun, support different activities, he said.
'For example, the dining room should be located where the digestion is most supported, and the study should be located where the intellect is most lively.'
He added that if this order is not upheld, it can disrupt the subtle balance of everyday life. 'One may get hungry in the bedroom and tired in the kitchen.'
Relating this discussion back to the main focus of the conference and of his presentation, Dr Hartmann spoke about proper Vastu orientation and its importance in offices and other city buildings.
He said, 'Modern architecture and city planning do not have this knowledge of orientation. Buildings are randomly facing any direction, causing subtle violations of the natural law of orientation.'
Such subtle violations add up, creating a negative effect for the whole population.
'These violations accumulate day after day and week after week, and can produce a cloud of social stress hovering over the city so that nobody is really happy, healthy, or successful in these cities,' Dr Hartmann said.
He went on to describe how Maharishi Vastu architecture and city planning take these important principles into account in the design of every structure and community.
