England: Maharishi Peace Colony in Rendlesham built on ancient royal site

A recent BBC regional headline declared: 'Anglo-Saxon ''kings' village'' discovered in Rendlesham'. During the last several years, archeaologists in Suffolk county in the UK have quietly been excavating a 120-acre (50 hectare) site they discovered almost by accident. Hundreds of Anglo-Saxon artifacts of jewelry, brooches, buckles, harnesses, pins, pottery fragments, etc. have been discovered, totaling about 700 objects.

Of the many gold coins that have been retrieved from the site, some of them were minted locally near Rendlesham. Others, dating to the Roman Empire, were minted in Constantinople. Gold and silver coins from France and the Netherlands have been unearthed. Evidence of both a goldsmith and a bronze worker have been uncovered.

Rendlesham is mentioned in the Historia Eccelesiastica, An Ecclesiastical History of the English People, compiled by a monk called the Venerable Bede. In the book, completed around 730 AD, he mentions 'the kingly town that is named Rendlesham'. The Anglo-Saxon term for royal shield is Rendlesham. 'Rendle' and 'sham' mean the home of the shield.

This recent discovery is considered to be the most important so far in Britain during the 21st century. It follows what was said to be the most significant archaeological discovery of the 20th century, that of the burial ship (grave) of the first King of England, King Raedwald, in Sutton Hoo, about 5 miles from Rendlesham. King Raedwald is believed to have resided in Rendlesham. The burial ship contained a tremendous amount of gold and other artifacts that tell the story of his royal burial.

The Maharishi Peace Colony in Rendlesham, also called Maharishi Garden Village, is a development of about 30 houses and another 30 apartments built according to the principles of Maharishi Vedic Architecture. It sits on this site, where a royal town existed for about 400 years between 400 and 800 AD. It was the home of the first English king in history, who was the overlord of both northern and southern Britain. The location, it has been suggested by leading historians and archaeologists, was the first English capital.

When the 30-bedroom Maharishi Peace Palace for England opens in Rendlesham it will be the first of its kind in the country. The 22,000 square foot building will include an exhibition hall, conference rooms, and a health spa. It will be the centrepiece of Rendlesham's Maharishi Garden Village.
