Four Maharishi Upper School students recently came away with five awards at the 22nd Annual 2004 High School Shoot-Out sponsored by the Texas A&M University -- Commerce Third Floor Photographic Society, widely recognized as the best photography program in the Southwest.

There were 2,592 prints entered this year. Out of the 34 participating high schools, 18 placed in the contest. Maharishi School entered 10 of 17 categories and came away with five awards.

The winners are Anna Sica, grade 10, second place in the First-Year Color category and third place in the Open/Color category; Camie Bargerstock, grade 12, second place in the Portrait-People Color category; Heather Kufner, grade 11, honorable mention in the First-Year B/W category; and T.J. Smith, grade 12, honorable mention in the First-Year B/W category.

The students themselves printed the black-and-white images in Maharishi School's darkroom. Carolyn Waksman is the Upper School photography teacher.

'The judges were energized by the high quality of the work entered,' Ms. Waksman said. 'They were also impressed by the level of design, composition, and concepts involved in the imagery.'
