Business class exercise makes regional headlines
by Jim Karpen
The Review, Vol. 19, #15 Translate This Article
Fairfield, Iowa, United States
2 May 2004
Students in a marketing class who did an exercise modeled after the hit TV show 'The Apprentice' made the front page of three newspapers and were covered by KTVO TV.
On the first day of class teacher David Goodman gave the students three and a half hours to create a business selling chai and to report back with their profits. The two teams, each with nine students, made a profit of over $600 -- and caught the attention of the media.
The Ottumwa Courier was the first to cover the news, putting the entire article, headlined 'M.U.M. Students Experience the Real-World Version of 'The Apprentice,'' on the front page on the day prior to the final episode.
That same day KTVO TV, based in Kirksville, Missouri, and serving southeastern Iowa, came to campus to tape an interview with the students. A segment aired on the 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. news.
The next morning the Cedar Rapids Gazette carried the news on the front page, saying that the students 'blended the gentle philosophy of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and the tough business sense of Donald Trump to brew up marketing strategies.'
And that afternoon the Fairfield Ledger had a major article at the top of the front page, along with a photo of the students and Dr. Goodman in class. The students were also interviewed by KMCD radio. . . .
