School teams head to world creativity competition

Last month seven teams of Maharishi School students captured first place at the state competition of Odyssey of the Mind and Destination Imagination, entitling them to compete at the upcoming global finals in Washington, D.C., and Knoxville, Tennessee. . . . This is the tenth year in a row that Maharishi School will represent Iowa at the global finals.

Destination Imagination and Odyssey of the Mind are competitions in which students learn to work together in teams to come up with ingenious (and entertaining) solutions to complex challenges. These programs are designed to help young minds 'think outside the box.' . . .

These teams will be competing against approximately 8,000 students from 47 states and 15 countries. The students, coached by Mark Headlee, have been working together since October to perfect their presentations.

Both Odyssey of the Mind and Destination Imagination require students to be completely self-sufficient. The creative problem-solving process calls for divergent thinking and technical, theatrical, scientific, linguistic, musical, and mathematical skills, among others.

Projects range from building weight-bearing structures out of balsa wood to creating complete theatrical performances, including scripts, sets, props, music, choreography, and more.
