Lynch tells students, 'Your brain needs this'

On 3 October 2005 Washington Square News reported: Continuing his cross-country tour of colleges and universities, director David Lynch spoke twice to packed halls at the Cantor Film Center in New York City, 'hoping to give students the gift of enlightenment'. Lynch, director of enigmatic movies such as 'Blue Velvet' and 'Mulholland Drive', was described as a 'proud supporter of the popular spiritual practice of Transcendental Meditation', and hopes to raise $7 billion to help more people learn the technique. Lynch was joined by scientists Dr John Hagelin and Dr Fred Travis. Travis connected a Transcendental Meditation practitioner to an electroencephalogram (EEG) machine, a device that monitors brain waves, and showed that as the person entered a meditative state, the readings became less tumultuous and more concentrated and rhythmic.

Washington Square News reporter Andrew Tan talked to a student who watched the demonstration. 'I came here for David Lynch, but I found that Transcendental Meditation and the way it was presented with EEG very interesting, and it convinced me to learn more about it,' sophomore Brett Ackerman told him.
