Soccer team earns second place in league competition

The Maharishi University of Management soccer team went undefeated for much of the regular season, losing two matches toward the end of league play and earning second place.

The team competed in an Iowa City soccer league and their final regular-season loss came in a close match against the top team, the Iowa City soccer club, which is made up largely of University of Iowa students.

The post-season tournament pitted the same top teams against each other—Iowa City and Maharishi University of Management. This time, the hard-fought match on a rainy day ended regulation play in a tie, and was decided by a game-ending tie-breaker in which each player in turn made a penalty kick at the goal—and ended in a loss for the Maharishi University of Management team.

In addition to the distinction of being one of the top two teams in the league, the Maharishi University of Management team held two records: the team with the most overall number of goals scored against opponents, and the team with the fewest goals scored against them.

Speaking of the recent season, player Gabe Walker said, 'We loved it— getting out there and playing while the sun was setting with all these wonderful guys and getting exercise. There was a real bond. It brought people together.'

Many of the players on the team had previously played for the Maharishi School soccer team, including Paul Strubell, who played soccer for the University of Massachusetts after graduating from Maharishi School.

Nick Forland, from the U.K., also previously had a career on a college team, playing for UCLA.

Team members Chris Lynch, Rama Hall, and Dallas Terry shared the duties of coaching. Other team members included Garret Strubell, Colin Heaton, Amit Hooda, Sagar Patel, Jeremy Jones, Sean Carter, Andrew Kennedy, Felipe Navesse, Celio Mondjane, Aurelien Windenberger, Catherine Coffey, Carlo Castillo, Nevin Kepler, and Felisto Guezimane.

Coach/player Chris Lynch spoke highly of the team's efforts and singled out two standout players. 'Rama and Nick as center defenders were a complete unstoppable force that really drove our team,' Mr. Lynch said.

The team plays in late April and May and then in September and October. They practice three times a week on the Bobby Warren Field. They also play indoor soccer during the winter, using the Fieldhouse for play.
