An unusually high total of 127 new students is expected for spring semester, including at least 75 new Computer Professionals students expected this month.

By comparison, this represents a 79 percent increase over the number of new students that arrived for spring semester last year.

According to Ron Barnett, dean of Admissions, about half of the new U.S. students who arrived in January hadn't yet learned the Transcendental Meditation technique. 'This is a sign of broader public acceptance of Consciousness-Based education,' he said.

The January arrivals included about 20 students who enrolled in the M.B.A. with emphasis in accounting. Mr. Barnett said that this new professional program, which now has nearly 40 students enrolled, has the potential to draw similar numbers of students as the Computer Professionals program, which currently has several hundred students enrolled, both on campus and via distance education.

He said that one reason for the rapid growth of the professional programs is the strong word-of-mouth promotion. Students come here, have a good experience, and then tell their friends back home.

At the end of last semester there were about 360 students enrolled on campus. Taking into account January graduates and new arrivals, that figure will rise to around 435 by the end of this month.

'It's going to be a lively environment,' Mr. Barnett said.
