Maharishi School girls basketball qualifies for state tournament
The M.U.M. Review Translate This Article
8 March 2006
As this issue of The Review goes to press, the Maharishi School girls basketball is competing in the prestigious state tournament in Des Moines, having won the regional championship in an exciting game that went into three overtimes and saw Sofia Iwobi score 49 points.
It's the first time that a Maharishi School basketball team has made it to the state tournament, which features the top eight teams in each of four divisions (according to school size).
The team was ranked the entire season and entered the tournament with a record of 19 wins and 5 losses.
In the regional final against Highland, which made it to the state tournament last year, Maharishi School was behind by as many as 10 points in the first half. But they closed the gap early in the second half, and regulation play ended with the teams tied at 54. In the third overtime, Maharishi School finally pulled it out, with a 78-75 win.
While the contest was billed as a shootout between two stars — Ms Iwobi and Highland's Rachel Yeggy, who scored 46 points — s. Iwobi's teammates made a strong contribution, hitting key baskets late in the game.
Bonnie Carter finished the game with 11 points, Amelia Freeberg had 9, Sheila Higgins and Dorothy Kern had 4 points each, and Alena Goldstein hit a free throw.
The team is coached by Brendan Higgins.
