Plan to meditate to educate

A daily dose of Transcendental Meditation (TM) can be a positive lesson in ensuring that peace rules in the classroom and the playground the New Zealand press reports.

The article stated that in an address to educators at a conference in Christchurch on 29 June, Ashley Deans, the director of the Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in Fairfield, Iowa, advocated awakening the brain with Consciousness-Based Education.

The article said that Deans explained how 'two 10-minute daily sessions of TM in schools created 'stressless schools' where learning was boosted and violence and aggression disappeared.'

The practice was used in the United States with the same results, the article noted.

The article further explained that according to Deans 'research over the past 35 years showed that TM encouraged creativity, intelligence, and academic performance.' The article further stated that 'research had also shown the benefits of TM to children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.'

The article stated that Ministry of Education spokesman Vince Cholewa said that it would be up to the boards of trustees, who run their schools, whether or not to introduce TM.

The article quoted Cholewa as saying, 'If a board wished to include TM and consulted the parents, it would not be an issue as long the school was meeting curriculum requirements.'
