Students in the Sustainable Living program can now receive credit for successfully completing a range of certification courses, including LEED, which is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings.

The certifications are an optional feature of the program, and offer the students widely recognized credentials that will help establish them in their careers in areas such as the development of sustainable communities.

'LEED' refers to The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System, and the certifications include new commercial construction and major renovation projects; existing building operations and maintenance; and commercial interiors projects. Students who complete LEED certification in any of these areas will receive University credit toward their Sustainable Living degree.

Also qualifying for credit is training in building biology via the Certified Building Biology Environmental Consultant (BBEC) certification. Building Biology principles are rapidly gaining the respect of many mainstream architects and builders, medical practitioners, health and other environmentally concerned businesses. This surge of interest in healthy building practices has created a strong demand for persons who are trained and skilled environmental consultants.

The Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) is training offered annually in Fairfield during the summer. It is a foundational course in sustainable living systems design for all climates and landscapes that connects students to a global network of permaculture contacts and projects.

Also, students have the option to gain competency in two industry-standard simulation software programs: ENERGY-10, which helps users to identify the most cost-effective, energy-saving measures for planning a low-energy building, and Chief Architect, home design software that's the industry leader for residential and light commercial design.
