Maharishi School Director enlightens Scottish educators - Part III

Part I and Part II of this article report on how Dr Ashley Deans, Director of the Maharishi School at the Age of Enlightenment, Fairfield, USA, recently completed a highly successful visit to Scotland to promote the introduction of Maharishi's Consciousness-Based Education there.

The following day, two conferences were held in Edinburgh, both in very dignified settings. Here, Dr Deans was joined by Derek Cassells, Head Teacher of the Maharishi School in Lancashire.

A journalist from a local radio station with about 40,000 listeners conducted an excellent interview with Dr Deans before the afternoon conference. Both presentations in Edinburgh went well, with some educators in attendance and a good turnout from the Transcendental Meditation community, who were keen to hear Dr Deans and follow up on his initiatives in Scotland.

On the final day of the tour, two conferences were held at the Education Department of Glasgow University. In the afternoon there were three educators: a faculty member, a school inspector, and a headmistress of another Catholic school. The headmistress was very interested, asking a lot of practical questions that Derek Cassells was well placed to answer.

Dr Deans gave a series of outstanding lectures and presentations in the course of his tour and made an extremely good impression on everyone. He was pleasantly surprised by the receptivity in Scotland and would like to return.

David Rae and his team of dedicated Governors [Teachers of the Transcendental Meditation Programme] in Scotland have been very heartened by the reception they had on this tour, and are now planning how to implement Consciousness-Based Education in interested schools. The recommended first step is for the head teacher to learn Transcendental Meditation, along with key members of staff, who usually recommend it enthusiastically to the other teachers. The school then writes to the parents and arranges a meeting with them. Representatives of the school and the Transcendental Meditation organization explain to the parents how Consciousness-Based Education will enhance the school's strengths, while eliminating existing problems. Eighty per cent of parents usually agree to the programme.

The children, like the teachers, are generally very pleased to be offered the chance to practise Transcendental Meditation for 15 minutes twice each day. (Typically, time is made for the programme by reducing each period by five minutes.)

The team in Scotland were most inspired to learn from Dr Deans that, in the USA, 13 schools have recently implemented Consciousness-Based Education. Also, in China, huge schools have adopted the programme with the support of their regional government, and there is a distinct possibility that the central government may support its introduction elsewhere in China.

Preparations are already being made for Dr Deans's visit to England and Wales in October, following Scotland's inspiring lead.
