Dr Bevan Morris, Prime Minister of the Global Country of World Peace and President of Maharishi University of Management reported on the commencement ceremony at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, IA, USA on 30 July 2007. He said 163 students graduated with their bachelor's, masters, and doctoral degrees.

The keynote speaker was Dr Ramani Ayer, who is Chairman and CEO of The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., a Fortune 100 company with 31,000 employees, which has assets of $377B under management, and has doubled in size under his leadership.

Dr Ayer gave credit to Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Programme for his success. He has been a practitioner of Transcendental Meditation and its advanced programmes including Yogic Flying since 1979; shortly before his career hit a breakthrough that led to his current position.

He said in his address that the level to which one can be awake on the level of the transcendent determines the degree of success as a leader. A leader has bold and positive ideas, and in order to come up with such ideas and implement them, one must be self-aware—aware of the Self.

Dr Ayer explained that many ups and downs come in every industry, and he told some stories of the tremendous losses his own company has faced. In order to manage such challenging times, it was his ability to maintain his Self-referral, Self-sufficient state that carried him through, and that is what he advised the young graduates—that they need to be Self-referral in order to handle challenges that will inevitably arise.

He also said that other qualities, like a sustained passion for excellence, was another thing that completely depends on how awake and aware—how much established in the Self—one is.

He said the final quality of a leader—one that is very much lacking in the world today to the detriment of effective leadership—is the capacity for love. It's absolutely essential, he said—one must be committed to the good of everybody— to care for and enrich everybody's life.

A business leader must serve the employees, customers, and all people in his sphere of influence. One simply must have a deep loving concern for them—only then can one achieve all the goals he has set to achieve.

In short, Dr Ayer said that in order to be a great leader, utilize Maharishi's techniques for the development of consciousness twice a day—transcend, and you will have that bliss inside, and love will grow inside, and you will have the fulfilment of all your aspirations to achieve great leadership for the world family in the coming times.
