The Nataki Talibah Schoolhouse of Detroit, a middle school in Michigan, USA has been offering the Transcendental Meditation Programme to students and teachers for the past 13 years as part of the school's wellness programme.

Transcendental Meditation has made the students more focused on their school work, more patient with the learning process, and more reflective about their behaviour, said Carmen N'Namdi, chief education officer of the school—and a practitioner of Transcendental Meditation since 1973.

'It's been noted a number of times that our [students] are extremely good in their interpersonal relationships—very supportive of each other,' Ms N'Namdi said, speaking at a recent major press conference* in New York City.

More than 300 students and teachers at the Nataki Talibah Schoolhouse practise Transcendental Meditation. Students say they really appreciate having this quiet time for themselves at the beginning and end of each school day. Transcendental Meditation has become so important, that it is given as a health benefit to the teachers.

The school introduced Transcendental Meditation to help students navigate the 21st century. In this technological age, students face challenges such as 'bombardment' from the media, Ms N'Namdi said, and reduced physical activity and recess time.

Transcendental Meditation is deeply appreciated at this school, which was already health-conscious—serving no red meat or caffeinated beverages.

'There's nothing more wonderful than to have teachers who don't even work at the school any more or children who are now in high school call you and say that ''this [the Transcendental Meditation Programme] was the greatest tool you could have ever given us,'' ' Ms N'Namdi said.

In the coming days, Global Good News will continue to feature other speakers from the 3 April press conference in New York.

*Educators, doctors, and celebrities spoke at the 3 April press conference preceding the historic Paul McCartney benefit concert on 4 April at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The extraordinary achievements and goals of the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace were showcased at the press conference.

The 'Change Begins Within' benefit concert contributed funds to teach one million at-risk children Transcendental Meditation—giving them life-long tools to overcome stress and violence, and promote peace and success in their lives.

The concert was headlined by Paul McCartney, with special guests including Ringo Starr, Sheryl Crow, Eddie Vedder, Ben Harper, Moby, Paul Horn, Bettye LaVette, Donovan, and Jim James.
