During the major press conference in New York on 3 April, preceding the 'Change Begins Within' benefit concert* for the David Lynch Foundation the next day, leading physicians and educators endorsed the introduction of Consciousness-Based Education and Transcendental Meditation into schools around the world.

The first speaker was Carmen N'Namdi**, Principal of Nataki Talibah Schoolhouse in Detroit, Michigan, USA, where Transcendental Meditation has been offered for 13 years with wonderful results. Ms N'Nami laid out the need for Transcendental Meditation in schools and how this programme has transformed her school.

Dr William Stixrud, a clinical neuropsychologist in Washington, DC, discussed the impact of stress on children's lives and endorsed Transcendental Meditation for young people.

Renowned psychiatrist Dr Norman Rosenthal spoke next. Dr Rosenthal is the author of many books, and expert on anxiety, depression, bipolar disorders, and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He strongly advocated for the use of Transcendental Meditation in schools.

Dr Gary Kaplan, a neurologist with the New York University Medical School, spoke from the perspective of an attending family physician, saying that Transcendental Meditation is something for the whole family—children and parents—and underscoring the need for it in today's society.

Dr Robert Schneider—whose Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention has received $24 million from the US National Institutes of Health to study the effects of Transcendental Meditation on heart disease—described the enormous amount of research confirming the health benefits of Transcendental Meditation for releasing stress and promoting heart health.

The final speaker was Father Gabriel Mejia, who runs 47 homeless shelters in Colombia, and has been instrumental in 3,600 children learning Transcendental Meditation. He spoke eloquently and passionately about how Transcendental Meditation is transforming the lives of these children.

* The 'Change Begins Within' benefit concert contributed funds to teach one million at-risk children Transcendental Meditation—giving them life-long tools to overcome stress and violence, and promote peace and success in their lives.

** Ms N'Namdi has also served as Chair of the Board of the National Charter School Institute and member of the Board of the Michigan Association of Public Schools. In 2007 she was named 'Michiganian of the Year' for a high-achieving Detroit school and for innovative teaching techniques.
