At the annual Latin American Summit for Excellence in Education, which took place recently in Lima, Peru, leaders in Consciousness-Based Education for the Global Country of World Peace in Latin America were honoured for their vast achievements within the continent's schools.

Dr Javier Ortiz, National Director of Peru for the Global Country of World Peace, reported on 1 September 2009* that over 500 authorities in education attended the summit, from countries throughout Latin America as well as from Spain, Portugal, France, and Holland. The main purpose of this year's event, he said, was to discuss ways of creating happiness among families through quality in education.

About 50 different lecturers spoke at the summit on this topic, most of them addressing specific problems in need of remedy, and some discussing solutions such as implementing technology within classrooms to encourage post-graduation success among students.

'There were many approaches addressed at the conference, but when we spoke of the benefits of Consciousness-Based Education near the end, we opened people's eyes to the only true solution to the problems faced in Latin America's schools,' said Dr Ortiz. In their addresses to the summit, he and other leaders discussed both scientific research on benefits of Consciousness-Based Education for Latin America, and their experience establishing the programmes within the continent.

Reviewing the achievements in Latin America, Dr Ortiz noted that 60,000 students have learned the Transcendental Meditation Programme over the last three to four years—some in each country of the continent. In Peru alone, 30 schools have adopted the programme: 10,000 students now practice TM, and 2,500 practice the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme.

At the end of the lecture, Consciousness-Based Education leaders received great appreciation. Many educational leaders expressed interest in implementing the programme within their schools in Latin America—including schools in Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Honduras. Some leaders expressed immediate interest, and signed pre-agreements for implementing Consciousness-Based Education in their schools. 'Participating in this summit allowed us to achieve extensive results all in one stroke,' commented Dr Ortiz.

Also at the conference, Dr Ortiz initiated plans for introducing Consciousness-Based Education into a conglomerate of schools in Peru—including two universities and two schools, totaling more than 50,000 students. In addition, Dr Ortiz has planned a meeting with an educational leader in the central Andean region of Peru, which includes 200,000 students.

Finally, Dr Ortiz announced that the Fundacion Maharishi de America Latina, which funds the implementation of Transcendental Meditation in the continent's schools, received an award for excellence in education at the summit. In addition, both Dr Ortiz and Raja Jose Luis Alvarez, Raja of Invincible Latin America for the Global Country of World Peace, were awarded honorary doctoral degrees in education.

'It is a great achievement to have received these awards not from a single academic institution, but from a large association of schools, universities, and educational authorities from countries throughout Latin America,' said Dr Ortiz in conclusion.
