Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, is an award-winning, private institution providing Consciousness-Based Education for preschool through high school. Dr Richard Beall, Principal of Maharishi School, spoke recently about the school's innovative environmental education programmes.

'In 1981, when the School was founded, we chose Pioneers as our mascot, and we've been pioneering Consciousness-based Education for almost 30 years now. We also chose green and gold as the school colours. We didn't realize at the time how well they represent the two features of our mission: Green represents sustainability and life in tune with Natural Law; gold represents the development of consciousness.'

'Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Founder of the Transcendental Meditation Programme, gave us very profound and comprehensive knowledge for living in accord with all the Laws of Nature,' explained Dr Beall. Maharishi's programmes address all areas of life, and include: Vedic Organic Agriculture; Maharishi's Vedic Approach to Health; Vedic Architecture to align human life with the Laws of Nature; and much more. 'Through these and other programmes developed by Maharishi, every bit of our experience can be aligned with Nature's functioning—from the surface, to the subtle, to the transcendental level.'

These principles, and the direct experience of the home of all the Laws of Nature at the basis of the students' own consciousness, are the foundation for a deep understanding of both the inner and outer levels of Nature's functioning.

Said Dr Beall, 'In 2005, Richard Louv, author of the Last Child in the Woods, conveyed the urgent need to reconnect today's tech-savvy children with a natural experience of the outdoors. It's important that our students have that connection, to awaken the sense of stewardship for the future of the planet. We take this responsibility seriously.' At Maharishi School, the children's connection to the natural world grows through free play time as well as many creative educational activities, including camping trips, gardening, and 'green' technology.

Global Good News will feature the continuation of Dr Beall's report on the environmental education programmes at Maharishi School tomorrow.
