On 29 October 2009, a grand celebration in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, inaugurated the new initiative of the national government to implement the Transcendental Meditation Programme in the city's public school system.

The Brazilian government was first inspired to launch this programme by the visit of Dr David Lynch, renowned filmmaker and champion of Consciousness-Based Education, to Rio de Janeiro last year. 'This had a profound impact on authorities and the Brazilian population at large, heightening their interest in Transcendental Meditation for schools,' reported Raja Jose Luis Alvarez, Raja of Invincible Latin America for the Global Country of World Peace, speaking on Maharishi Global Family Chat.*

Raja Luis went on to report that the school project in Brazil will be the largest-scale application of Consciousness-Based Education in Latin America so far, with an initial goal to instruct 7,000 students in Transcendental Meditation. Ultimately, the aim will be for 1.5 million students to learn the technique in 1,000 public schools in the Rio de Janeiro area.

The celebration itself, which auspiciously took place on the Day of Awakening of All the Laws of Nature, was a joyful event attended by famous performing artists and government officials, including the Secretary of Education for Brazil. The celebrity artists each spoke to the audience about their positive experiences practising Transcendental Meditation, and offered strong support for the newly launched programme to implement TM in Rio de Janeiro's public schools.

'The goal of these artists during the celebration—and continuing after the celebration—was to create a positive, supportive environment for students, helping them to understand the real benefits of Transcendental Meditation,' said Raja Luis. He added that these same celebrities will be fielding questions from students in an online forum—or blog—hosted by the Brazilian Department of Education's official website.

The celebration, which was webcast globally and viewed in at least 88 different locations around the world, also featured an address by Dr David Lynch via videoconference.

'The remarkable thing about the event,' said Raja Luis, 'was that all of the speakers—the artists and government officials—recognized the full potential of this programme. They acknowledged not only the likely benefits for the students and schools themselves, but the prospect of invincibility for the city, the nation, the continent, and the world.'

In a future Maharishi Global Family Chat, Raja Luis will share video footage from the celebration, including speeches from Dr David Lynch and the Secretary of Education for Brazil.

* Raja Luis's report was featured on the 3 November 2009 Maharishi Global Family Chat, broadcast daily via Internet webcast on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3. Podcasts of the daily Global Family Chat (audio track) are also available for automatic download, via an RSS feed.
