On 20 December 2009 The Washington Post reported: College students practising Transcendental Meditation as part of a recently published scientific study conducted in Washington DC, USA experienced such benefits as lower blood pressure and increased well-being. It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring fulfilment to the field of education.

Two hundred ninety-eight students, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, participated in the study.

'Many students reported that they enjoyed the experience and felt better, but the most substantial finding was that students who were at risk for developing hypertension often saw their blood pressure drop significantly,' the Washington Post reported, expressing the perspective of American University psychology professor David A.F. Haaga.

Dr Haaga, who did not practise Transcendental Meditation, helped offer students the opportunity to be part of the study.

'Josh Goulding, 24, participated in the study during his junior year at Georgetown,' The Washington Post reported. 'After three months of meditating daily, Goulding said his high blood pressure dropped significantly and he was able to focus better in class.'

Goulding, who is still practising Transcendental Meditation, was quoted in the article as saying: 'There's no question that it helped me. It's almost like cleaning and dusting your mind on a daily basis.'

As student stress levels rise, colleges across the country are offering students a time and place to meditate and reduce stress, the article reported.

'The style of meditation used in the study was Transcendental Meditation Programme, a trademarked technique taught through a series of lectures and meetings with a certified teacher,' The Washington Post reported, also noting that hundreds of scientific research studies have been conducted on this specific meditation technique.
