The article features an interview with eminent brain researcher Dr Fred Travis, who is Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, USA.

Dr Travis explains how the Transcendental Meditation Technique activates the frontal lobes of the brain and promotes greater brain integration, for more creativity, success, and higher performance in life. 'Your brain changes throughout your life,' he says. 'Your brain is not a rock. It's a river. . . . every time you do something today you're strengthening circuits so that you can do it better tomorrow. The reality of life is that we create our own destiny in a very physical way.'

Dr Travis goes on to say that Transcendental Meditation leads to a new experience, called 'restful alertness', in which attention circuits are more active, and the frontal areas are more integrated. 'This state of restful alertness has its own associated brain circuits, . . . and the brain patterns during Transcendental Meditation [also] begin to be seen during activity.' This means that 'you've added something new to your experience, and that is inner stability, inner rest, inner expansion. This is the value of adding Transcendental Meditation to your life—to begin to change those brain circuits so that you can have fullness, alertness, inner stability, happiness in whatever situation you are in.'
