Please click on the following link to read more about 'Results of the research study on Transcendental Meditation at American University in Washington, DC, USA'. The article features an interview with Dr Fred Travis, Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, USA. Dr Travis is one of the senior investigators on a research study that was conducted at American University in Washington, DC, USA, to monitor the effects of Transcendental Meditation (TM) in university students. The study was published in the December 2009 issue of American Journal of Hypertension.

In the interview, a video of which is featured on the website of the Transcendental Meditation Programme in the United States, Dr Travis describes the results of the random-assignment study, which aimed to gauge the effects of Transcendental Meditation over a semester of college.

Two and a half months of meditation practice provided a 'buffer' for students against the stress of college, he said. The students practising TM were able to respond less to stressful stimuli; were more awake and less sleepy; and the frontal area of the brain, 'which is the executive processing part of the brain, was more coherent'.

'We found that practice of Transcendental Meditation fundamentally changed how the brain functions in a positive way,' Dr Travis concluded. 'The brain is able to support greater breadth of vision—being able to deal with the stress and demands of college on time.'
