Numerous awards won this year by students at Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in Fairfield, Iowa, USA included such competitions as the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, the Rotary Youth Leadership Forum essay contest, the Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student Award, and the Midwest Regional BioGENEius Challenge.
In a recent report of achievements from the past year, Dr Richard Beall, head of Maharishi School, highlighted awards received by two students.*
One student was among 240 selected from 8,000 applicants for the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.
He received an honourable mention for his presentation on the use of recycled material to create effective heat and sound insulation.
An 11th grader at Maharishi School represented Iowa and the whole Midwestern United States in the Regional BioGENEius Challenge, Dr Beall continued.
The student 'investigated why insecticides reduce the effective enzymes in industrial starch degradation', Dr Beall said. He found that the use of these chemicals actually increases production costs, and his research placed him among the top five students in a nine-state Midwestern region.
He was also a participant among only 115 students worldwide at the World Food Prize Youth Institute.
For his essay on leadership, he won first place in the state in the Iowa Rotary Youth Leadership Forum essay contest, Dr Beall continued.
Most recently, this same student was one of 15 in the state to receive the Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student Award.
'This is a very prestigious award,' Dr Beall said, noting that former US President Herbert Hoover was a great humanitarian. As an engineer, President Hoover was responsible for the food shipments to aid Europe after World War I and II.
