Governor of Iowa, USA, names Maharishi School student one of the most promising young scientific leaders

The article features Atreya Dey, a graduating senior at Maharishi School in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, who has been receiving increasing national recognition for his scientific achievements, demonstrated in prestigious competitions in the past few years.

Now comes one more top-level award: The Governor of Iowa, Terry E. Branstad, has announced that Atreya is one of two candidates selected as the two most promising young scientific leaders in Iowa's 2011 high school graduating class. At the invitation of Governor Earl Ray Tomblin of West Virginia, they will participate as delegates in the 48th year of the National Youth Science Camp held near the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank, West Virginia.

Iowa's delegates are selected from a pool of worthy applicants by the Iowa Academy of Science and Iowa Department of Education Science Consultant. The committee gives preference to students with an outstanding academic record and broad extracurricular interests, who demonstrate creativity and commitment to community, and the intention to pursue a STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) career.

Editor's note: The Upper School program at Maharishi School in Fairfield is designed to give students a solid foundation in the traditional secondary school subjects and to prepare them for success in all areas of life. Students begin and end the school day with the practice of the Transcendental Meditation program. A nourishing, supportive environment further encourages the student's holistic development.
