A recent study shows the Transcendental Meditation Programme to be beneficial for students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). While students may naturally grow out of a hyperactive disorder, attention deficit usually continues. Students practising Transcendental Meditation have an increased ability to focus, research indicates.

There are two aspects of ADHD—attention deficit and hyperactive disorder, explained researcher and neuroscientist Dr Fred Travis, Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition at Maharishi University of Management.

Most students will tend to grow out of a hyperactive disorder, but attention deficits one doesn't grow out of—'however impacted you are by attention deficit at [age] 10, that's what you'll be at 15, 20, 25,' Dr Travis said.

While daily activities as simple as stopping at a stop sign allow students to modulate and control their motor behaviour, 'there's not a task during the day which just exercises our attention circuits—except for Transcendental Meditation,' Dr Travis said.

This may be why participating students experienced the benefits found in the study.

Continuing to describe the effects of Transcendental Meditation found in the study in terms of different brain wave frequencies, Dr Travis explained that 'one marker of ADHD is the amount of theta, relative to the faster frequency beta, which is what allows you to focus.'

'People with ADHD have higher levels of theta EEG than the normal person, and this blocks out relevant as well as irrelevant information.'

After three months practising the Transcendental Meditation Programme, 'this brain marker of the severity of ADHD had come closer to normality,' he said.
