UK: Acclaimed jazz musician Matthew Halsall a graduate of Maharishi School, now Maharishi Free School

A renowned jazz musician and graduate of Maharishi School in the United Kingdom shared his extraordinary talent at a celebration of the opening of Maharishi Free School this September.

Now considered by many to be a leading young jazz musician in Great Britain, Matthew Halsall is an example of how Consciousness-Based Education supports student achievement and development of full potential, a school official commented. As a state-funded school, Maharishi Free School will be able to offer this education to many more students.

Bullied at his former school because of his musical talent, Matthew began attending Maharishi School in his teens.

Within the first 15 minutes of his first day at Maharishi School he felt at home there. His parents felt it was the educational environment they had wanted for him—an environment in which his skills could blossom.

Often called 'one of the UK's brightest talents', Matthew is reknowned as a gifted trumpeter as well as composer, arranger, DJ, producer, and bandleader. BBC television's one hour documentary about him—'The day that changed my life'—featured his experience coming to Maharishi School and his parents' comments as well.

After featuring Matthew on the BBC 'Worldwide' jazz programme last year, the host, Gilles Peterson, said, 'If I could watch any jazz band in the UK, any, I would choose Matthew Halsall's band, just love what he's been doing for the last few years. . . . It's always high level, spiritual jazz music.'

He is one of 'so many graduates of the school now going out into the world achieving great things,' an administrator of the Transcendental Meditation Programme in the United Kingdom said.
