Maharishi University of Management professor wins award at International Conference of Parallel and Distributed Computing

Dr Bruce Lester, professor of Computer Science at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, recently received the Best Paper Award at 'The 2011 International Conference of Parallel and Distributed Computing' held in London, UK, in July. This conference was part of the annual World Congress on Engineering sponsored by the International Association of Engineers.

His paper, entitled 'Improving performance of collection-oriented operations through parallel fusion', presents some of the latest ideas about parallel programming.

'A new era of computer technology started a few years ago in which computer processors have what is called multiple cores,' Dr Lester said. He explained that 'the processor is like the brain of the computer; it performs all the basic computational operations. . . .

'If a computer processor has four cores, each computing one billion operations per second, then the whole processor can compute a total of four billion operations per second. . . .

'It's expected that the number of cores per processor will double every three years until possibly up to 100 or more cores are contained in a single processor. So these multiple cores offer a tremendous opportunity for improved performance of future computer technology.

'However, unfortunately current computer languages and computer programming techniques are not adequate to realize this potential. . . . To fully utilize the multiple cores, a new type of programming is required called parallel programming.

'There's a large amount of research going on all over the world now by many computer companies and universities to develop better techniques for parallel programming . . . In my paper I present a parallel programming technique called 'data parallel programming'.*
