At the 40th anniversary celebration of the founding of Maharishi University of Management (MUM), presentations were given by two leaders who helped launch the university, including Nat Goldhaber, who first proposed the idea of MUM to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
Mr Goldhaber began by recounting his work in the mid-1960s teaching the Transcendental Meditation Programme in Berkeley, California, USA, where he instructed hundreds of people each week. He also started a TM club at the University of California, Berkeley, which grew to be the largest group on campus.
Following a large lecture by Maharishi in Berkeley, attended by an overflowing crowd, Mr Goldhaber came up with the idea to establish a university based on Maharishi's Science of Creative Intelligence (SCI). At the time, students at other universities were receiving academic credit for SCI courses taken outside of the curriculum, and Mr Goldhaber believed that this knowledge should form the basis for a new university. He proposed this idea to Maharishi in 1971, while Maharishi was conducting a symposium on SCI in Amherst, Massachusetts, USA, and Maharishi immediately approved of the project.
Mr Goldhaber went on to describe the process of successfully achieving accreditation for MUM, and selecting the first university president, Robert Keith Wallace, PhD. Dr Wallace conducted the pioneering research on the physiological effects of the Transcendental Meditation technique, and was also instrumental in the initial plans for the university. He is now a member of the university's board of trustees and co-dean of Maharishi College of Perfect Health.
Dr Goldhaber's account reflected how 'easy and spontaneous' it was to establish MUM, since it reflected the need of the time, university leaders commented at the celebration.
