The Maharishi School Trust in the UK is in the process of petitioning the British government for support to create two new Maharishi Free Schools in England. These petitions follow in the wake of the great success of the first Maharishi Free School, established in September in Lancashire.

The process to submit the petitions is complex with many requirements, yet Dr Peter Warburton, Chairman of Maharishi Foundation UK, is optimistic. One requirement is the support of at least 100 local parents and their children.

The response from the communities where the proposed new schools would be, in London and Suffolk, has been overwhelmingly positive.

Dr Warburton said that in order to spread the word about the Maharishi Free Schools, people are 'handing out leaflets to young parents who look as if they might have children of the right age'.

Generally, such leafleting campaigns are arduous and inefficient, but this one has been different, he said. Everyone who is involved, in both areas, reports 'blissful experiences from telling people about Maharishi Schools and the opportunity'.

Although the expected response might be that some of the parents feel they are being pestered or feel annoyed at the interruption of their busy day, the experience has been positive.

'In fact, when young parents are told about the Maharishi School, they say, ''It's so kind of you to tell me about this; I'm so glad you told me. I'm going to look into this, study what you've given me''.'

In addition, both local communities have come forward with great location sites for the new schools. In the London location, the local authority has offered 'a fantastic five-acre site', Dr Warburton said.

He reported that in Suffolk, 'we actually have nine different options of where the school could be located, with the support of local MPs, local authorities, local people, parish councils, and so on.'

Global Good News will continue to feature Dr Warburton's report on Maharishi Free School.
