UK: Proposed Maharishi Free Schools far exceed student registration requirements

Based on 25 years of success with the original Maharishi School in Skelmersdale, UK and its recent approval as a government-supported Free School, the process is underway to create two new Maharishi Free Schools.
With the government application deadline fast approaching, the two proposed schools, one in Rendlesham, Suffolk and the other in Richmond, Surrey (London), are making great progress.
At the site in Richmond, informative meetings for the community and parents have regularly been packed, said Dr Peter Warburton, Chairman of Maharishi Foundation UK.
The plan for this school is to have two classes in each year of primary school and three classes in each year of secondary school. With 24 pupils in each of those classes, that makes a total of 120 students.
Earlier this month registrations for students were approaching 200, already far above the required quota. Now, just before the deadline, the parents of 769 children, representing 510 families, have registered Maharishi School Richmond as their 'first choice' school, according to the Maharishi Free School website.
In the area, there is a lack of school places so the Maharishi Free School has received a great deal of publicity and support from the local Council and parents, Dr Warburton said.
He mentioned that there has been a really good feeling in the informative meetings. The parents are keenly interested in the project and eager to participate.
In Rendlesham also, Dr Warburton commented, 'The project to establish a Maharishi School in that area is going really well.'
The original plan was to establish a presence in the secondary school with 15 children per class and start with one class. But so many parents have registered the school as their first choice, that the school will likely make the class size 24.
As part of the application process, it is necessary to fill two classes, one in the first year and one in the following year. This serves to show that there is parental demand for this programme.
In order to fulfil that quota, 48 applications from parents were needed. Two weeks ago, Dr Warburton remarked that 'so far there have been 60 applications. So 60 sets of parents have indicated that that school in Rendlesham is the first choice of school for their child.'
As of yesterday the number of children registered for the initial 48 places had risen to 70.
Global Good News will report more about the progress of the Maharishi Free School application process.
