While in the area of Capetown, South Africa during the continuing 14-country Invincible Africa tour, Dr Bevan Morris, President of Maharishi University of Management (MUM), met with leaders of the Sustainability Institute at the Stellenbosch University.

During the meeting Dr Morris described comprehensive Sustainability initiatives that have been implemented for some time on the MUM campus in Fairfield, Iowa, USA.

These include the commitment to a campus-wide sustainability approach, as well as academic programmes such as the Sustainable Living undergraduate degree programme and MBA in Sustainable Business graduate degree programme.

Dr Morris also described the progress in building the Sustainable Living Center, which has been under construction on the MUM campus for several years. The new building is set to open 18 April.

It will be the 'greenest' building on a college campus in North America, he said, fulfilling certification requirements for LEED Platinum, as well as the Living Building Challenge and Building Biology (Bau-biologie). The building is also unique in that has been designed according to principles of Maharishi Vastu architecture in accord with natural law.

The foundation for the success of all of these initiatives is the school's Consciousness-Based Education programme, including daily practice of the Transcendental Meditation Technique, through which students grow in the qualities of inner sustainability by developing consciousness and gaining the ability to act in harmony with nature.

Dr Morris described all of these features to the Sustainability leaders at Stellenbosch, and how the students at MUM are deeply focused on all issues of sustainability. He also discussed possibilities for interaction between the two institutions, including exchanges of students.
