20 March 2012
At the annual conference of the Academy of Management in 2011, eight faculty members from Maharishi University of Management (MUM) spoke. The faculty are all part of the University's PhD in Management programme.
Dr Dennis Heaton, Dean of International Programmes at MUM and co-director of the Management PhD, recently spoke about the conference, highlighting the unique qualifications and expertise of that department's faculty.
According to its website, the Academy of Management is 'a leading professional association for scholars dedicated to creating and disseminating knowledge about management and organizations. Founded in 1936 by two professors, the Academy of Management is the oldest and largest scholarly management association in the world. Today, the Academy is the professional home for 17,773 members from 111 nations.'
The theme of the 2011 conference was West Meets East: Enlightening, Balancing, and Transcending.
'We felt compelled to put in a bid expressing what we know from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (Founder of Maharishi University of Management) about enlightening, balancing, and transcending,' Dr Heaton remarked. 'I was pleased that a paper that I wrote was accepted and presented at the conference. It was called ''Maharishi on Management: Transcending, Enlightening, Balancing, and Harmonizing''.'
In addition, there were other presentations, including a panel about Consciousness-Based Education.
At the panel, eight faculty members presented, including Dr Heaton, Scott Herriott, Vicki Alexander Herriott, Jane Schmidt-Wilk, David Goodman, Fred Travis, and adjunct faculty Harold Harung and Cathy DuBois.
Several faculty have had submissions accepted for the 2012 Academy of Management conference, including the paper 'Meditation: Practice, Purpose, and Entrepreneurial Success', by Eva Smith, Dr Heaton, and Dr Jane Schmidt-Wilk.
Professor Schmidt-Wilk has also found success in other areas of the management field. Since 2005, she has been the editor of the Journal of Management Education, a peer-reviewed leading voice in the scholarship of teaching and learning, published by the OBTS Teaching Society for Management Educators. As an editor, she has published 42 issues and written 30 editorials, each editorial challenging the readers to think about teaching management in a new light.
