Students of Maharishi University of Management's PhD in Management programme have been finding academic success and recognition.

According to Dr Dennis Heaton, co-director of the programme, an emphasis on social and environmental responsibility naturally emerged as a result of the PhD students' inclinations and research.

Dr Heaton provided some examples of present and past dissertation research topics with this emphasis on sustainability and consciousness:

The role of HRM (human resource management) in implementing sustainability

Conceptions of sustainability in Cameroon

Higher states of consciousness and trust

Support of nature and success

Brain integration and management integrity

Consumers and non-genetically modified food

Effects of green-certified building

Moral development of CPAs

Environmental Management System and corporate financial performance

Development economics based on natural law

Self-development and leadership behaviors

The effects of the Transcendental Meditation Programme on stress in managers

Students in the programme have been finding recognition. Dr Heaton mentioned the work of Manjunath Rao.

Mr Rao, under the guidance of advisor Dr Andy Bargerstock, had an article published in Management Accounting Quarterly. The article was titled 'Exploring the Role of Standard Costing in Lean Manufacturing Enterprises: A Structuration Theory Approach'.

This research received the LEI Excellence in Lean Accounting Student Award from the Lean Enterprises Institute.

Mr Rao also received a $4,000 research grant from the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) research foundation to continue with his dissertation. The IMA is an association of accountants and financial professionals; the grant was the IMA Doctoral Student Grant. According to the IMA website, 'The Research Foundation Doctoral Student Grant Program is designed to assist accounting doctoral students who are pursuing research that has the potential to contribute to the management accounting profession.'

Other students in the Management PhD programme are also having success, said Dr Heaton.

He mentioned a student who is studying how corporations can practice sustainability in Cameroon.

'She found that the important value that distinguishes the African approach to sustainability is the value of community . . . the African cultural spirit which is called Ubuntu.'

Another doctoral student did interviews in China to learn more about the relationship between managers and their senior managers.

'She wanted to develop an indigenous theory of management' in China, Dr Heaton said.
