The Management PhD programme at Maharishi University of Management has been increasing its focus on consciousness, sustainability, and ethics.

Dr Dennis Heaton, co-director of the PhD programme, spoke recently about the success his students have been finding. He highlighted in particular the relationship between Consciousness-Based Education and increased integrity.

This area of research has caught the attention of at least one MUM doctoral student.

Said Dr Heaton, 'A current PhD student is looking at the relationship between brain integration and integrity, ethics in business.'

He continued, outlining the distinct connection between the education that MUM offers and increased ethics:

'The Consciousness-Based Education approach changes the brain and develops an integrated brain. This brain integration is correlated with higher levels of moral reasoning. So the word integrity in character and business practice must be connected to integrity in brain functioning.'

Dr Heaton explained that brain integration scores were correlated with scores on standardized paper-and-pencil measures of moral reasoning, and that the experience of Transcendental Consciousness—the silent, unbounded field of pure intelligence at the basis of the mind—during Transcendental Meditation is correlated with greater integration in the nervous system, as measured by the Brain Integration Scale.

'The research at our university verifies the effect of education on moral development and even more scientifically . . . the hard measure of transforming brain functioning.'

Faculty at Maharishi University of Management recently had two papers published on the subject of ethics.

The first paper was titled 'An Eastern Approach to the Global Challenge of Corruptibility', by Dennis P Heaton and Ravi Subramaniam. The article was published in Ethical models and applications of globalization: Cultural, sociopolitical, and economic perspectives.

The second article, 'A Consciousness-Based Approach to Management Education for Integrity' by Dennis P Heaton, Ravi Subramaniam, and Fred Travis, was published in the Handbook of Research on Teaching Ethics in Business and Management Education.

Based in part on the success of these articles, MUM's faculty will present on a panel at next year's Academy of Management conference. They will present on the topic of corruption and using education to prevent corruption in business and management.
