EDAPO orphanage in Uganda: 'An amazing phenomenon'

On his current 14-country tour of Africa, Dr Bevan Morris recently stopped at the EDAPO school for orphans in Uganda.
The school, situated just north of the capital, Kampala, provides food, shelter, education, and basic medical care to hundreds of children orphaned by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Over half these children are also living with HIV/AIDS.
'This school is really an amazing phenomenon,' remarked Dr Morris, who is President of Maharishi University of Management.
He added that, in EDAPO, all children over the age of ten have learned the Transcendental Meditation Technique.
'It's not only the orphans who have learned, but also the guardians . . . kind of like grandmothers, who have adopted these children. All the teachers and many of the leaders within this organization (EDAPO) have learned Transcendental Meditation.'
Upon his arrival, children at the orphanage lined up to receive Dr Morris and the other visitors who came to the school. The children gave each visitor a rose.
The director of EDAPO, Mark Mugabe, was also there to welcome Dr Morris. Mr Mugabe mentioned his desire to provide shelter and education to 400 more orphans, as well as to construct buildings on the campus which are in accord with ancient Vastu architecture.
'It's a very simple place,' said Dr Morris. 'You can see that their classroom is very basic. It's tin sheets and some tree branches.'
He added, 'Your heart goes out to every one of them. You want [the children] to have a better life.'
A promising sign for the county of Uganda and the EDAPO organization is the return of three young teachers of Transcendental Meditation who are now ready to teach in Uganda.
'These are great young teachers,' Dr Morris remarked. They 'have been working on this project and other projects in Kampala and they'll be doing much more after this visit [of Dr Morris to Africa].'
During Dr Morris's time at the school, the children performed a very lively song and dance, and everyone had a chance to practise Transcendental Meditation together.
'The whole atmosphere was so blissful and colourful; everyone was so happy,' he said.
He added that the children had come a long way in the last year.
Before, 'they were quite depressed, quite down . . . but now the spark of joy, the spark of life has come back for them thanks to the benefits of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Technique.'
