At the welcoming ceremony held in honour of Dr Bevan Morris, students from a primary school in Kenya were not the only ones to show their support of Consciousness-Based Education and Transcendental Meditation. Political representatives, educational leaders, and even groups of students from neighbouring schools came out in welcome.
Dr Morris, President of Maharishi University of Management, visited the Nandi Hills area and the school as part of his 14-country tour of Africa, the goal of which is to spread awareness and raise interest for Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's programmes and technologies of consciousness.
The school, which already implements Transcendental Meditation on a wide scale, pulled out all the stops to welcome Dr Morris and their other visitors.
Some students from the primary school performed an elaborate dance with spears and shields and a beating drum. The lively performance really delighted all the children in the audience.
In addition, Dr Morris added, a marvellous choir from a neighbouring school walked a few kilometers to get to the primary school and perform for their welcome celebration.
Dr Morris was impressed with the accomplishments of the students and dedication of the parents, especially given the school's facilities.
'The conditions are very simple,' he said. 'They have very little in the way of equipment. The buildings are very simple. And yet [the parents] are just so keen for their children to have the best education and to grow up to be the very best citizens.'
Dr Morris reported that a scholarship was recently set up to assist students who show an interest in continuing with their Consciousness-Based Education programme beyond primary school.
Now there are scholarships so students who graduate from these two primary schools in the area, 'who want to go to consciousness-based secondary education, can go across the border to Uganda . . . to the Maharishi Secondary School for Girls there.'
This scholarship resulted from a natural desire to assist the students in Kenya, Dr Morris said.
'You just want them to have everything in the world. Your heart pours out to them. They're very serious and sincere young people and you want to do everything, give everything to them, that they could have an enlightened education,' through the gift of Maharishi's system of education.
