Maharishi School: 'A dream come true' for Oprah

The article features the visit last October of Oprah Winfrey to Maharishi School in Fairfield, Iowa, USA. She spent a day in Fairfield interviewing people and filming various aspects of life in 'America's Most Unusual Town' for an episode of the 'Oprah's Next Chapter' series that aired 25 March on her OWN network.

When Oprah first arrived at the school, she looked up at and read out its name engraved above the door. She was struck by it—'Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment'. 'I always wanted to help create an Age of Enlightenment, but I didn't know how,' she commented to her host, School Head Dr Richard Beall.

She spent some time talking with, and then practising Transcendental Meditation with, some of the older girls. She asked Essa, a high school student who has been practising the Transcendental Meditation Technique since age 4, 'What do you think it has done for you?'

A very poised Essa responded, 'I think that being in that inner silent space in yourself twice a day, everyday . . . affects my interactions with others and how I perceive the world in a positive way.'

'Who knew that there was a school in Iowa based on consciousness?' she commented to a group of teachers just before leaving. 'This is a dream come true to see a school based on consciousness. It's a very special day to actually see it.'
