Faculty and staff from Maharishi University of Management recently went on their own academic treasure hunt, in which they traveled to India to track down rare and precious Sanskrit texts.

Dr Peter Freund, head of the MUM tape library, spoke about this trip and the impetus behind it. He mentioned the university's expansive collection of Sanskrit texts, a collection which rivals that of any of the top universities in the world.

Dr Freund earned his PhD in Maharishi Vedic Science in 2006 and, according to the Vice President of Maharishi University of Management, is 'a walking repository of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's knowledge, having literally lived with our collection of Maharishi tapes these past 30 years.'

Vice President Dr Craig Pearson spoke proudly of Dr Freund and his PhD work.

'As part of his doctoral research, he essentially put the entire Vedic literature online. More precisely, he put online the world's most comprehensive and orderly collection of Vedic literature that's written in Sanskrit Devanagari script.'

This collection is made up of about 60,000 pages of Vedic texts.

Dr Pearson continued, 'Among these texts are rare texts, highly sought-after and out-of-print collections. Dr Freund inspired libraries and scholars from around the world to contribute.'

Although almost all of the texts are now online, Dr Pearson added that there are a few texts which still need to be assembled or gathered, 'including some rare texts in the south of India that need to be converted to Devanagari'.

It is pursuit of these and similar texts that sent a colleague of Dr Freund's to India, where he encountered musty libraries, administrative red tape, misinformation, and lack of information.

In spite of these numerous obstacles, the desired texts were found and are being added to the MUM library.

Dr Pearson concluded, 'We are just so proud here at Maharishi University of Management of this work and so proud to be the host of the world's most comprehensive online collection of the Vedic literature.'
