Three rare Sanskrit texts sought for vast 'Vedic Reserve' online library: Resource for students, scholars

Though it is one of the world's most complete collections of Vedic texts online, the Vedic Reserve website is constantly being updated and improved.

The Vedic Reserve site was created by Dr Peter Freund as part of his PhD dissertation. The site was created to assist students at Maharishi University of Management who are participating in the Reading Vedic Literature programme, which emphasizes the importance of reading complete texts in Sanskrit.

Dr Freund, the university's tape librarian for over 30 years, has put online the world's most comprehensive and orderly collection of Vedic Literature written in the Sanskrit Devanagari script. The collection comprises almost 60,000 pages of Vedic texts, including rare, sought-after, and out-of-print publications.

But the collection is not complete, Dr Freund said. He mentioned three main texts that he is focused on acquiring and putting online.

'The three areas we're focusing on right now are the field of Shiksha . . . . Currently there's not much research in that area going on, so it's still a very new field. Second area is the Upapuranas, which seem to have been very much neglected also, although there's a little interest from scholars here and there. The third area is Sthapatya Veda. There's a section of that called Agama. . . . The texts themselves are mostly not published. So these are the areas we're currently most interested in pursuing.'

When asked about the prospect of completing the Vedic Reserve website, Dr Freund said the site will likely be expanding for years to come, but he hopes to reach a satisfactory point soon.

'There seem to be more ''corners'' still in view . . . but we're focusing on these three areas: Sthapatya Veda, Shiksha, and the Upapuranas. If we can get those done, I think we'll be in very good shape.'
